SAVE CARROLL ACADEMY
 
 On, February 25, 2008 the S.A.I.S.D. called a special meeting to close six schools.  They are Carroll Academy, Travis Elementary, Mann Middle School, Bowie Elementary, Pfeiffer Academy and Cooper Middle School.  The community gave a resounding no to the closures.

 This is a nightmare no child or parent should have to deal with alone.  It could be your child's school next? 
 
There is a second round of school closures comming will you still remain quite. I don't think so!  It is like the old saying, "it is not in my backyard", so it does not concern me.
It may not concern you now but the school board may not give you no notice the next round. Other than to say we have decided to close your school.
 
 
A community meeting on February 12, 2008 was held at Carroll Academy.  Parents and the outcry from locial business and people in the community showed and voiced their concerns.  The proposed closing of Carroll cannot come to pass.  The board said "we have declining enrollment", they lied we do not.  The board said, "our children will be introduced to a better curriculum", again they lied.  What better curriculum?  Our students and staff and Principal have been recognized.
 
 The safety of our students is that not a concern? 
     Obviously not when we presented the social problems in the area schools considered for our children to Mr. Duron,  Mr. James Howard, Mr. Julian Trevino,  Mr.Thomas Lopez,Mr. Carlos Villarreal, Mr. Doug Sellers, Mrs. Olga Hernandez and Mr. Eliseo E. Cadena members of our S.A.I.S.D. Board.
 
Our children are going to be bused into an area of known sex offenders, drug activity and prostitution. (go to www.Texas Department of Public Safety for a list of sex offenders (78220).
 
Mr.(Coach) Henry A. Carroll, was a greatly admired educator who served the youth, partons and the community of S.A.I.S.D. for thirty-three of his thirty-nine years in Education.  Coach Carroll's widow stood before the board and upon closing  said, "You want to promote excellence, not demote it". 
    
     Our children were preparing for the TAKS Test when news of closing Carroll came.  You would  think the board would of taken this into consideration.  Shame on the board.

The S.A.I.S.D. met on March 24, 2008 to discuss issues other than the recent closures.  However, Mann, Travis and Carroll were in attendance.  When the opportunity to speak to the board came I handed them copies of the sex offenders along with their pictures and a map of the hundred year flood zone.  I explained to them that those homes will never be rebuilt and would lessen Gates enrollment not Carroll's.  The three points made where: (1). Sex Offenders, (2). Flood zone, (3). No declining enrollment. Why would S.A.I.S.D. want to send more children into this enviornment?  You would think that the Board would reconsider the closing of Carroll and instead close Gates. The Board should be very concern about a child's safety.

 

Even with the propose parks they plan to build in the flood zone cannot and will not increase enrollment for Gates.  However; it could cause those preditors even more access to our children.  (Just a thought).  Carroll is the best choice by far to keep open.  If not why are business owners  looking to lease the building.  Excellent location. Their marketing department has done it's homework on the location of Carroll versus that of Gates.  When the Board said they toured the area on a bus to make a determination to  close Carroll.  Why didn't someone look on the Public Safety website to see how many SEX OFFENDERS live around Gates.

 

 

FYI

Did you know that Gates Principal Grady is over the math department for the district now .  That the welcome she gave at both meetings was scripted and a lie she told to the parents. Gates will be looking for a new principal.
